Newsletter: What’s added/changed in last month for OCI?

Let’s check all features/services OCI has updated in week 16 (25-Apr-22 – 01-May-22).

Data Integration

A new release of Data Integration is now available. The release comes with the below bug fixes:

  • DOS-4805: Reconfigure the incoming parameter default values of a SQL task in a pipeline.
  • DOS-4811: Fix data type validation failures during design time when a SQL task has invalid input parameter values. Data Integration displays a warning when the configured value of:
    • An input parameter does not match the defined data type of the parameter.
    • A NUMERIC data type input parameter value is NULL.
  • DOS-4831: The previous release introduced a regression in pipeline execution performance that is now addressed.
  • DIS-17398: Edit and validate expression nodes in data flows that were created in previous releases of Data Integration.
  • DCMS-5575: Select a Hive data asset when configuring a target operator in a data flow.
  • DCMS-5622: Support for the following nested complex data types is added for Avro data source files:
    • Union(Map)
    • Array(Record)
    • Array(Array)
    • Array(Map)
  • DCMS-5427: Incorrect reading of data is fixed for Oracle Object Storage source files when a file pattern is used to exclude any attribute.

You can use TCPS to connect when registering external databases in OCI, in addition to TCP that was available in the previous versions. TCPS is TCP/IP with SSL. This protocol enables an Oracle application on a client to communicate with remote databases through TCP/IP and SSL, which provides higher security than TCP alone. For more information, click here.

Security Zone

You can now restrict File Storage operations using security zone policies. The policies can be enabled in custom security zone recipes. The new policies are not enabled in the Maximum Security Recipe. For more information, click here.

There are additional features introduced in the latest release of the security zone. now, you can customize new security zones in the following ways:

  • Create a custom recipe and enable specific security zone policies. Previously, all security zones used the Maximum Security Recipe and you couldn’t enable or disable policies.
  • Create a security zone for a compartment with existing resources. Previously, you always had to create a compartment to create a security zone.
  • Edit a security zone and change its recipe. Previously, you couldn’t edit an existing security zone.
  • Remove a subcompartment from a security zone. Child compartments can be in separate security zones from the parent compartment.
  • Use APIs and the OCI CLI to manage recipes and security zones.

You must enable Oracle Cloud Guard before you create new security zones. Cloud Guard helps you detect policy violations in existing resources that were created before the security zone.

You can’t create a security zone for a compartment that is already associated with a zone. In this case, the Create Security Zone button is disabled and you must select a different compartment.

You can now move metric data points from Monitoring to supported target services: Functions, Object Storage, and Streaming. To move metric data points, create service connectors that use the Monitoring service as a source.

Service Mesh

The Service Mesh is a new service introduced in OCI. With this service, organizations can secure, observe, and connect microservices that make up cloud-native applications with no application changes required. For more information, click here.

The Virtual Testing Access Point (VTAP) service is introduced in OCI. VTAP functionality sometimes referred to as full packet capture or traffic mirroring, allows you to make a copy of the traffic that traverses a specified point in your network and send the mirrored traffic to a collector for analysis. For more information, click here.

Web Application Firewall

The HTTP request body inspection feature is added to the Web Application Firewall. You can enable the feature when you add your request protection rule or update an existing protection rule to include it. Only those protection capabilities that have body inspection conditions can use this feature. For more information, click here.

Application Performance Monitoring

In Synthetic Monitoring, you can now set up Dedicated Vantage Points on which you can run your monitors. Dedicated Vantage Points define a secure location within your tenancy and give you complete control over network settings and enable you to monitor endpoints that are not publicly accessible. For more information, click here.

Below new features are enabled in Speech:

  • Closed captions: Provides you with an SRT file as an extra output format. Use the SRT to add closed captions to your video files.
  • Punctuation: Long text requires punctuation so Speech punctuates the transcribed content automatically.
  • Telephony ready: Your files can be 8 kHz or 16 kHz and each is automatically detected so that the right model is applied. With this capability, you can transcribe telephone recordings.
